3 arrested for fraudulent redemptions of SingapoRediscovers vouchers; suspended travel agency

SINGAPORE: Three people linked to travel agency Continental Travel have been arrested for their alleged involvement in fraudulent redemption of SingapoRediscovers vouchers.

The suspects are said to have entered into repayment arrangements by offering customers cash to redeem their vouchers through the purchase of local tours from the agency, police said on Friday (October 15).

This is not allowed under the SingapoRediscovers Vouchers program, police noted.

The program was introduced last December to support local tourism businesses hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Singaporeans aged 18 and over in 2020 received S $ 100 in vouchers, which can be used on qualifying products such as tours, attractions and hotel stays offered by licensed merchants.

The three suspects were arrested on September 27.

Police said they were taking “a serious stand” on any attempt to defraud government support programs, adding that investigations were ongoing.

In a media advisory, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said it had issued Continental Travel Singapore with a notice of intention to suspend its travel agent license.

Continental Travel Singapore has also been removed from the SingapoRediscover Vouchers program and will not be allowed to accept new bookings involving the vouchers.

“Existing SingapoRediscover Vouchers bookings that are legitimate will not be affected and pre-booked experiences may still go as planned,” STB said.

The travel agency has 14 days to appeal the notice of suspension.

“Continental Travel Singapore will always be required to fulfill all existing obligations to its consumers and industry partners, including ensuring that all existing bookings, whether or not involve the use of SingapoRediscover vouchers, will not be affected during the notice period and any subsequent suspension period, ”STB said.

He added that the agency is also required to notify all customers of the notice of suspension of their travel agent license.
