Dartmouth man arrested after six-hour standoff with police

A six-hour standoff between a knife-wielding man and Dartmouth police ended peacefully on Saturday.

At around 10 a.m. on August 20, Dartmouth Police attempted to arrest 20-year-old Jack Bradford Gifford of Dartmouth Street on an outstanding warrant.

As police attempted to arrest him, Gifford armed himself with a knife and barricaded himself inside his home, police said.

After several failed attempts to get Gifford out of the house, police called negotiators and SWAT team members from the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council.

Still, negotiators failed to get Gifford out of the residence, so SWAT members entered. According to police, at that time Gifford left the house peacefully.

He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.

In addition to the warrant, Gifford now faces multiple charges related to the standoff, police said.
