Hays Travel suspect arrested for armed robbery in Stanley


A MAN who allegedly threatened travel agency staff with an ax in a terrifying armed robbery this morning has been arrested.

Hays Travel, on Front Street in Stanley, was raided just after 10:40 a.m. today, triggering a major police intervention to grab the man with the ax.

It is understood that he threatened the staff working in the store before escaping with money.

Witnesses reported a huge police presence in the town and a police helicopter was dispatched as officers scoured the area looking for the man.

A man who works at a nearby office said: “Apparently someone hit Hays with an ax and came out with a bag.

“Since then there have been police everywhere, some of them look like gun officers with helmets and balaclavas. ”

Police confirmed that a suspect had been arrested and was being questioned by detectives.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “No staff were reportedly injured in the incident.

“This afternoon, a man was arrested in connection with the incident. He is currently in police custody and the investigation is continuing.
