JAC demands clarification on Energy Minister’s statement



The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Umngot hydropower project asked for clarification on the “MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) statement canceled” made on Monday by Energy Minister James Sangma, calling it ” ambiguous”.

“His statement lacks clarity. What MoU is he (James Sangma) talking about? The old memorandum of understanding signed with the JP group was signed by the previous government in 2007, and it was terminated in 2020 ”, asked Treibor Suchen, member of the JAC and general secretary of the Union of students of Jaintia. .

Suchen further asked that if said MoU was terminated in 2020, “then what was the reason the government called a public hearing on this in 2021?” “

“If the government wanted to abandon this project, it should send a clear message to the people and stakeholders who oppose the project,” he added.

He informed that the JAC will again hold a meeting with the associations of the tourism sector to discuss their future course of action, before scheduling a meeting with the Minister of Energy.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF), the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF), the Shillong Hotel Federation (FOSH), the Meghalaya Tour Operators Association (TOAM) ), the Meghalaya Tourist Guides Association (TGAM) and tourism companies from Shongpdeng, Darrang, Dawki as well as members of the Meghalaya Transport Association have supported the JAC.

However, they appreciated the government’s recent decision to abandon the proposed hydel project and maintained that they would not hold any discussion on stakeholder views on future hydel projects on the Umngot River.
