Four days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the underground parking space in Kanpur near a prominent tourist spot, Phool Bagh, it is still not functional. The underground car park was built by the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) to stop the illegal parking of vehicles on the roads causing traffic jams.
The parking space was inaugurated with great fanfare by the Chief Minister of State on September 30. However, the parking space is not yet open to the common man due to the incomplete construction. According to KDA officials, the finishing touches are left to work.
The KDA, citing the increase in the number of vehicles in Kanpur, proposed to build the underground parking space. Important points of the city, including tourist areas and markets, face heavy traffic flow as owners park their vehicles on the roads.
The newly constructed underground car park at Phool Bagh has a capacity of 494 four-wheeled and 532 two-wheeled vehicles. The parking lot was built in four years at Rs 60 crores by the Kanpur Development Authority.
An official from KDA, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The parking lot and the park will open to the public very soon. Civil works are in progress and will be completed soon.
The construction and beautification of the garden above the car park is incomplete. The park still has tall grass and construction waste strewn all over the place. The Horticulture department has not completed the task assigned to it either.
The KDA earlier set up two multi-level car parks in the city to reduce traffic congestion. According to reports, the two multi-level parking lots turned out to be failures.
KDA officials did not respond to questions about the delay in using the underground car park.
