Maya Bay in Thailand is now open to tourists and visitors after being officially relaunched on New Years Day. Visitors to Koh Phi Phi Leh will need to apply in advance and the number will be limited to 4,125 visits per day and the number of tourists cannot exceed 375 people at a time. But visits will be limited to 1 hour and no swimming will be allowed in the bay itself. But the new wave of visitors will be able to stroll or relax on the famous sandy beach, popularized in the 2000 film “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The cap on total visitors is not much lower than the peak of visits when Maya Bay was besieged by daily visitors before it was closed in June 2018. But the new restrictions were designed to control the movement of visitors and prevent boats from entering the bay.
80 tour operators, guides and tourism officials from Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Phang Nga took to the island last Wednesday to review new restrictions, changes and procedures as popular tourist attractions emerge after a 3-year hibernation .

Shaun Stenning of Phuket 5 Star Marine took his first boat to Maya Bay on the morning of January 1st. There were already a lot of people with almost perfect weather for the reopening.
âWe were there for the reopening and the national park rangers handled the access and the new processes well. The pre-registration system still has some issues to sort out.
âThe bay itself is beautiful, but we are concerned about the number of people and boats that are on the back jetty access. (see the video). As they continue to roll out the reopening, we hope they adjust the numbers down and create a better plan to handle the boats on the new dock. “
Maya Bay will now be open for tours every day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. All boats will need to access the island from the opposite side of the island from Maya Bay beach.
