More than 7,000 people affected by Covid take out unsecured loans in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh | Chandigarh News



CHANDIGARH: With Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh experiencing high numbers of Covid-19 cases, more than 7,000 people in the region have had to take out unsecured loans to higher interest rates than secured loans from banks for their processing. So far, 16,39,786 cases have been reported while the virus has killed 30,300 lives.
With limited beds available at public health facilities, large numbers of patients have been forced to seek treatment in private hospitals and pay high treatment fees. Even though the respective state governments have capped treatment fees, bills for even a week’s treatment, especially in cases of critical patients requiring an intensive care unit (ICU) and ventilator, amount to thousands of rupees.
In the Punjab, the daily admission rates for moderately ill patients requiring isolation beds including supportive care and oxygen at all private medical colleges are Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000, Rs 18 000 for intensive care with respiratory care. In the private hospitals of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (Nabh), the rates are set at Rs 9,000 for isolation beds, Rs 14,000 for intensive care without ventilator and Rs 16,500 for intensive care with ventilator . In hospitals not accredited by the Nabh, the daily rates are Rs 8,000, 13,000 and 15,000 respectively.
Even in the case of a sick patient admitted to a non-Nabh-accredited hospital, the bill for admission for a seven-day period amounts to more than one lakh. In addition to the admission fee, patients must pay for consumables and investigations.
In response to a question from KR Suresh Reddy, a member of Rajya Sabha of Telangana, the financial services department, the Ministry of Finance reported that public sector banks have provided unsecured loans to 1,33,080 people until 15 July, including 7,066 from the region. .
No less than 3,520 people have taken out loans in Punjab, 2,887 in Haryana, 814 in Himachal Pradesh and 408 in Chandigarh.
The ministry said public sector banks (PSBs) had announced an unsecured personal loan facility to cover the cost of Covid-19 treatment for the person or their family members. “All existing customers of banks affected by Covid-19 are eligible for an unsecured loan facility from PSBs in the form of a term loan, with repayment periods ranging from three to five years and a period initial repayment moratorium ranging from three to six months, the ministry said.
