The Lufthansa Group offers fares including “full” compensation of CO2 emissions

The Lufthansa Group has started to offer fares that include “full” offsetting of CO2 emissions. The group indicates that the new “green tariff” which is being tested in Scandinavia for flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines “includes full offsetting of CO2 emissions”.

What the Group means by this is that the tariff includes an additional premium that pays 100% compensation, 80% of the compensation being made by climate protection projects and 20% by the use of fuels sustainable aviation (SAF).

Many airlines, including those in the Lufthansa Group, offer the option of offsetting flight emissions, although fewer offer the option of purchasing SAF.

The Lufthansa Group offered passengers the option to offset their flights for a few years, but this spring integrated it into the booking process, including certified climate protection projects and SAF, after selecting their ticket. Lufthansa and SWISS customers can offset the CO2 emissions of their flight directly on board with the option displayed in the inflight entertainment system on certain flights. In addition, Miles & More members can use award miles to purchase compensation (a flight from Frankfurt am Main to New York in Economy Class, for example, can be compensated with only 1,150 award miles ).

The new pilot project means that the new “green” fare will initially be offered to all customers booking their flight from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The fare is displayed next to the regular fares (Light, Classic, Flex) as an additional fare option on the online booking screen directly after flight selection. The new offer is available in economy class and business class for flights within Europe. The new fare also includes the free rebooking option, plus additional status and award miles. From autumn, partner travel agencies in Scandinavia will also offer the new tariff

“We want to make CO2-neutral flying a matter of course in the future. To this end, we already offer our customers the most comprehensive range of services and are constantly expanding it. From now on, we are offering for the first time a dedicated “green tariff”, which already includes the full offsetting of the CO2 emissions of the flight through sustainable aviation fuel and certified climate protection projects, already integrated into the price. People do not just want to fly and discover the world, they also want to protect it. We are driven by the need to support our customers with the right offers,” says Christina Foerster, Member of the Lufthansa Group Management Board, Head of Brand and Sustainability.
